The focus of this set of links is on collections of
electronic texts (not individual titles) preserved through libraries, archives,
museums and corporate or private initiatives. Listings here are therefore
primarily for the written word as expressed in manuscripts, books and
periodicals, including newspapers. A few non-book digital library collections
are included. Readers wishing further leads to non-book digital content should
consult one of the directories or guides.
Unless indicated, access to these Web sites is free and open to the general
public.

Memory (Library of Congress). Multimedia collection based on Library of
Congress and other research collections in the US. All the collections are
searchable a variety of ways.
- Making of
America (MOA) (Hosted by University of Michigan). Full-text
searchable/browsable selection of books and journals dating between 1800-1925
relating to the development of the United States. The initial collection was a
joint project with Cornell University which also hosts a Making of America site.
Selections from both are also part of The
Nineteenth Century in Print: the Making of America in Books and
Periodicals (American Memory, Library of Congress).

The National Academies. "... created by the National Academies to
publish the reports issued by the National Academy of Sciences, the National
Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research

States. NAP publishes over 200 books a year on a wide range of topics in

New York, NY: New York Public Library, 2005-. Opened on March 3, 2005 to
Internet access, contains over 275,000 digital images, chiefly pictorial in

Library of Congress subject headings and by names associated with a specific

Digital Library of Appalachia seeks to provide online access to archival and
historical materials related to the culture of the southern and central
Appalachian region. The thirty-three member libraries, archives,
and museums associated with the Appalachian
College Association, known collectively as ALICE (Appalachian Library Information
Cooperative Endeavors), seek to generate interest and encourage
continued scholarship for the entire region. Information in the database
exists as reproductions of color or black and white photographs, reformatted
typed pages, published books, unpublished manuscripts, personal diaries and
