Appalachian College Association

-->Committee

The Digital Library of Appalachia (DLA) operates as a department within the Central Library that is a division of the Appalachian College Association.

The DLA Committee develops and revises policy and procedures for the DLA repository and sees to the maintenance and appearance of the site itself. In addition, the Committee recruits and trains  new contributors to the collection, while assisting in any way possible both new and ongoing contributors. Finally, the Committee participates in activities peripheral to the DLA repository that promote better preservation and understanding of the Appalachian culture. Ways these peripheral activities have been carried out have been through research, workshops, grant development and implementation in the preservation of materials. Also, a popular workshop series has featured authors and institutions who speak to the Appalachian experience.

The Mission, Membership, and Reports of the Committee are provided at this site. The Committee works not only with ACA member libraries, but also with museums, heritage centers, and other Appalachian centers both on the campuses of ACA members and in the region. Sometimes the committee includes representatives from these constituencies.

The DLA Committee functions largely through its listserv and through the activities of individual committee members working with individuals at ACA member sites. In this way, Committee resources are more directly applied to the development of the site than to maintaining a more conventional meeting schedule. Meetings are called when an issue cannot easily be resolved across the listserv.

The DLA Committee is commissioned by, and holds itself accountable to, the ACA Library Council.
